GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Health department officials are warning the public about rabies after a stray cat was found with the virus.
The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County issued the alert after a stray rabid cat was found in the area south of Hawthorne, off Southeast US Highway 301, on Aug. 28
A rabies alert will remain in effect for 60 days in the area within the following boundaries:
Northern boundary: Southeast 12 Avenue
Southern boundary: Southeast 24 Avenue
Eastern boundary: County Road 219A
Western boundary: Southeast U.S. Hwy 301
Health department officials warn people to avoid contact with wild animals. If exposed, people should seek immediate treatment.
