CANTON, Ohio (WJW) -- Twenty-four years after the deadly attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 firefighters, first responders and their supporters observed the sacrifice of their counterparts with a memorial stair climb.
At precisely 8:46 a.m., the moment the first of the trade towers was hit, firefighters from several Stark County area departments began climbing the 109 steps outside of the McKinley Memorial 12 times, simulating the climb to the top of the trade towers.
Each participant was given the opportunity to wear a badge representing one of the 343 firefighters who died on that day.
"It's a lest-we-forget situation, we want to remember the guys who gave the ultimate sacrifice the civilians, the military, the police that were killed that day and remember what happened and just try to make su
