DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -- Volunteers from around the Miami Valley came to Dayton National Cemetery Wednesday to clean the headstones of fallen veterans, saying this is how they will never forget 9/11.
While cleaning the headstones keeps the cemetery looking clean, this is a chance for people to honor first responders and veterans.
Using a special solution and with the help of the VA's groundskeeping team, dozens of volunteers grabbed brushes and buckets, and got to work.
Working headstone by headstone, row by row, people said this was not only an opportunity to give back but to also reflect on what service means to them.
The volunteers weren’t under the banner of a single organization. They were just residents from the area who wanted to give back on a day they said some gave everything.
