TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department said it is conducting an internal investigation after it was "made aware of an alleged social media post by one of its members referencing the death of Charlie Kirk," the conservative influencer who was assassinated at a speaking event in Utah on Wednesday.

The department's press release late Thursday afternoon provides no further details about the post or its contents, but TFRD's recent social media posts have been flooded with comments claiming it was made by a lieutenant who alleges the fatal shooting was a direct result of Kirk's political beliefs and affiliations.

The comment also says "Wish the guy was a better shot" in an apparent reference to the shooter, whom authorities are still searching for as of Thursday.
