SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. — Students in Sevier County are now passing through new artificial-intelligence weapons detectors as they arrive and leave middle and high schools each day.
The district installed 21 Evolv Express scanners this school year. Each unit costs about $21,000 and uses passive sensors and AI image analysis to identify guns, knives and other potential weapons. Similar technology is in place at Neyland Stadium and Dollywood. For 21 units, the cost is around $441,000.
The Sevier County School Board passed the measure after it was suggested by Superintendent Stephanie Huskey. Sevier County Junior High did a test run of the technology last spring. At Pigeon Forge High School, Principal Billy Wilson said it was a smooth process.
