DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — For years, Lisa Gilbride has been a familiar face at the Central Lincoln County YMCA in Damariscotta. Even though she no longer plays tennis, her impact on the sport has not faded.
Last week, her work in the sport was recognized on one of the biggest stages in tennis. Gilbride was honored at the U.S. Open in New York City with the Champions of Equality Award, given to individuals who have made tennis more equal and inclusive, regardless of someone's age, gender, ethnicity, or ability level.
“Just getting the award was humbling and wonderful,” Gilbride said. “We all had the same reaction—we thought maybe it was a scam when we got the invitation!”
Only 16 women nationwide were chosen for the honor this year.
