ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) - Thursday was a day of celebration and remembrance as Ballad Health held a press conference to honor the lives lost during last September's flooding while celebrating the efforts to save those at the Unicoi County Hospital.
More than 60 people were rescued from the roof of the hospital in one of the defining moments of Helene's flooding in our region.
"We were all scared," Erwin police officer Doug Gregg said. "We sent that text home. We didn't think we were going to make it."
Gregg was one of those on the roof. He said it took everyone in the hospital working together to make it through.
"For 62 people to live through that, and for that building to remain standing after seeing all the stuff that came down downstream, it's pretty amazing," Gregg said.
