CAMDEN, S.C. — The City of Camden is working to grow a greener tree canopy as part of a new initiative aimed at reducing flooding, extreme heat, and pollution.

Through a grant program called Trees 4 SC , the city is partnering with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the Green Infrastructure Center to strategically plant trees in areas where they can make the biggest environmental impact.

Marsha Potter, a community forest planner with the Green Infrastructure Center, has helped map out those high-priority zones, areas especially vulnerable to stormwater runoff, heat, and flooding.

“We create maps that show which trees are most helpful at reducing flooding so they can be protected,” Potter said. “And we identify priority places to plant new trees to help prevent future flooding.
