Dementia has now overtaken other illnesses as the leading cause of death for Australians, according to the latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Dementia in Australia report. The update, released ahead of Dementia Action Week (15–21 September), paints a sobering picture of the impact dementia is having on families across the nation, while also urging action to support those affected.
The report warns that without major intervention, more than one million Australians will be living with dementia by 2065. Dementia Australia CEO Professor Tanya Buchanan said the figures bring into focus the urgent need for greater awareness, support, and government commitment.
