GREENSBORO, N.C. — The FBI is investigating the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk while also leading a manhunt for the shooter.

On Wednesday, the FBI released new photos of a person of interest . The agency said it has received more than 7,000 tips and conducted hundreds of interviews as part of its investigation.

Eric O’Neill, a former FBI counterterrorism operative, said attacks like this create widespread fear and highlight troubling security gaps.

“Back in my days as an operative, I was not worried about this sort of domestic violence,” O’Neill said.

He pointed to the weapon believed to have been used — a bolt-action rifle — as evidence of the shooter’s skill and intentions.
