Cat owners are being warned amid a surge in a potentially deadly virus in Coventry . Experts at the RSPCA say they are seeing an increase in cats with the Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV).

Vets at the RSPCA Newbrook Farm Animal Hospital have seen a significant increase in cats from Coventry and Birmingham experiencing the highly contagious illness FPV. Kittens are the most severely affected.

Cats are usually infected by ingesting the virus from contaminated objects. Owners are being urged to get their pets vaccinated and ensure they have had booster jabs.

Getting cats spayed or neutered helps control the overall population, explained Jo Szkutnicki from the RSPCA . Overpopulation can lead to more stray cats, increasing the risk of the disease spreading.
