A man is in critical condition after police say he was hit by a train on the east side of San Antonio early Friday morning.

Police say he was walking on the tracks near East Commerce Street and Kraft Street just before 1:30 a.m. when he was hit.

Officers say the train conductor tried several times to warn the man on the tracks with the train whistle, but the 43-year-old victim couldn't avoid being hit. The man stepped off the tracks, but not far enough from the tracks to prevent from being struck by the train.

He was taken to BAMC in critical condition.

San Antonio police and officials from Union Pacific were at the scene.

"Around 1:30 a.m., a trespasser was struck by a Union Pacific train near Commerce Street and Kraf
