The New York Yankees are heading into a key series with the Boston Red Sox, but shortstop Anthony Volpe’s availability has become the big question. Volpe has been playing through a partial labrum tear in his left shoulder since May, and he was left out of Thursday’s lineup against the Tigers after getting a cortisone shot.

Manager Aaron Boone said Volpe is now day-to-day and likely won’t need to go on the injured list. It’s been a tough stretch for Volpe this season. He is hitting just .206 with 19 home runs and has committed 19 errors, the second most in the league.

Since early August, Anthony Volpe has been batting only .145, and fans haven’t been shy about showing their frustration. Boone has had to sit him in recent games, with Jose Caballero filling in at shortstop.
