NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Former New Orleans police officer and bodyguard for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell Jeffrey Vappie pled not guilty to his charges in a federal indictment on Friday, Sept. 12.

Vappie pled not guilty to all charges he faces, including payroll fraud and misuse of city funds.

Vappie faces up to 20 years in prison on counts 2 through 14 and up to five years on the others. Each count also carries a $250,000.

Federal prosecutors allege Vappie and Cantrell engaged in a scheme to cover up their relationship while using city resources. The current case also alleges the trips Vappie took with Cantrell cost taxpayers close to $70,000.

Cantrell pled not guilty to multiple federal counts on Wednesday.
