Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist, was fatally shot in a targeted attack on Wednesday while speaking at a debate at Utah Valley University. Authorities have since identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, 22, who is now in custody. The incident has drawn significant attention, with officials describing it as a political assassination.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in broad daylight on the university campus and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after. His body was transported to Phoenix, Arizona, the headquarters of Turning Point USA, aboard Air Force Two. Vice President JD Vance, along with other service personnel, helped carry Kirk's casket. Vance's wife, Usha, was seen holding hands with Kirk's widow, Erika, as they arrived.
In a social media post, Vance reflected on his friendship with Kirk, which began in 2017 after Kirk reached out to him following an appearance on a talk show. Vance described Kirk as a kind person and expressed his sorrow over the loss.
In a related development, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that individuals celebrating Kirk's death could face visa revocation or denial. He condemned the glorification of violence and hatred, urging people to report such comments made by foreigners on social media. Landau emphasized the need to protect American citizens from threats.
President Donald Trump confirmed Robinson's arrest during an appearance on Fox News, stating, "I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody." He expressed hope that the suspect would face the death penalty, calling Kirk a beloved figure who did not deserve such a fate. Trump received the information about the arrest shortly before his interview.
Governor Spencer Cox of Utah also confirmed Robinson's arrest, noting that he was not a student at the university. Cox mentioned that evidence, including engravings on bullets and messages from Robinson's roommate, played a crucial role in the investigation. Robinson had reportedly become more politically active in the time leading up to the shooting.
As the investigation continues, authorities are seeking further information from the public to aid in the case.
