FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi will travel and play with Inter Miami on the road against Charlotte FC in front of a sellout crowd at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Messi returns to Major League Soccer action after a nine-day layoff, and an emotional return to Argentina where he scored two goals in a 3-1 win against Venezuela in his final World Cup qualifying match in his home country on Sept. 4.
Messi returned to South Florida following the match, missing Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Ecuador on Sept. 9 so that he could continue recovering from a recent right hamstring injury before Inter Miami plays seven matches in the next 22 days.
“He was able to train with us all week,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said before Messi trained in Friday’s practice. “He trained well, so he'll be ready for [Saturday].”
Inter Miami is sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, while Charlotte has soared up to third place as the hottest team in the league with eight straight victories.

If Charlotte beats Messi and Inter Miami, the club would tie the MLS all-time record for consecutive wins. Charlotte announced its sellout crowd Thursday.
“We’re trying to end that,” Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright said of Charlotte’s win streak.
The Charlotte match will be Inter Miami’s first since their ugly Leagues Cup final loss to the Seattle Sounders on Aug. 31.
Inter Miami will be without striker Luis Suarez, who will miss his first match in a three-game MLS suspension after spitting on a Seattle staff member after the Leagues Cup loss. Suarez was also issued a six-match Leagues Cup suspension for the incident.

“We’ve already started preparing all week for the game with the mindset that we won't have Luis not only for this game, but also for the next two. We’ll try to do things in the best way possible to get the three points,” Mascherano said.
Inter Miami will also be without forward Fafà Picault (Haiti) and midfielder David Ruiz (Honduras) after both players picked up injuries during matches with their national teams during World Cup qualifiers last week. Midfielder Baltasar Rodriguez and forward Allen Obando will also miss the match due to injuries.
Inter Miami beat Charlotte 1-0 on March 9 in a match that Messi was supposed to come off the bench but was ultimately held out. Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari got a red card in the 38th minute, forcing the club to play with 10 men and delay Messi’s return from a muscle strain.
Charlotte has not lost a match at home since May 24, and has not lost an MLS match since June 28 against the Chicago Fire.
