NEWARK - Homeowners in Newark will pay an average $564 more in city property taxes this year – nearly three times higher than last year’s property tax increase – under a $970.2 million municipal budget introduced by city officials at a Thursday, Aug. 28 special meeting.

The Newark City Council successfully introduced the $970,180,790.27 municipal budget, which comes about five months late from the March 31 deadline, in a 6-0 vote. West Ward Councilman Dupre Kelly and East Ward Councilman Michael Silva were absent from the Aug. 28 meeting.

A public hearing and vote on the fiscal plan will be held after Sept. 24. A specific date for the budget adoption has not yet been announced.
