PHILLIPSBURG - A Newark man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Phillipsburg.

Authorities have identified James R. Dawes, 34, of Newark, as a suspect in the June 2, 2025, death of Kevin Clervil, according to a statement from Acting Warren County Prosecutor Jessica Cardone.

Clervil, of East Orange, was found to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds after the Warren County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that someone was attempting to forcibly enter a residence on the 100 block of Summit Avenue in Phillipsburg. He was transported to St. Luke’s Warren Campus, where he died.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, members of the U.S. Marshal’s Service’s New York and New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Dawes in Newark.
