BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - On Friday, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) announced the expansion of shrimping boundaries along the Gulf Coast.

The boundary expansion will go into effect at 6 a.m. on September 15 and will open all waters south and west of a line beginning at Beacon 18 in the Biloxi Bay Channel, running northwesterly to Beacon 22, northwesterly to Beacon 26, westerly to Beacon 34, westerly to Beacon 30 in the channel, and then due south to a point on Deer Island.

According to MDMR, this area is used as an extension zone and can be opened for commercial and recreational shrimping when sampling allows.

The decision comes about a week after reports of a below-average shrimping season.
