JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - An execution date has been set for a man who raped and murdered a junior college student in Mississippi more than 30 years ago.

Charles Crawford’s execution has been set for October 15.

Crawford was sentenced to death in 1994 in Tippah County for the murder and rape of junior college student Kristy Ray.

According to records, Crawford kidnapped 20-year-old Kristy Ray from her parents’ home, took her to an abandoned barn, raped and murdered her.

That occurred just days before he was set to go to trial in another rape case.

Records indicate Crawford left a ransom note in Ray’s home demanding $15,000.

Crawford was located and arrested. He later confessed to murdering Ray and took the police to her body.

He is currently being held at the Mississippi State Penite
