DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — An arrest was made Thursday in connection with the death of a teenager in Durham earlier this year, a warrant shows.
According to her obituary, Hailee Amari Maye died on May 15, four days after her 18th birthday.
Maye had recently graduated high school, according to nonprofit Student U Durham, which announced her death on May 23.
A warrant filed by the Durham Police Department shows Maye's death was investigated as a homicide. Jason Torres, 18, of Durham was identified as a suspect.
Torres is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Maye, according to the warrant.
Court records show Torres was not given bond. He made his first appearance in Durham County Court on late Friday morning and is scheduled to return on Oct. 2.
