KALAMAZOO, MI — The city of Kalamazoo pays for people to take a one-way bus trip out of town, through a program meant to help unhoused people who are passing through.
Over the past two years, the city has paid $11,506.66 to transport people across the country by bus, information MLive received by Freedom of Information Act shows.
Since December 2023, the city program has paid to transport 73 people across the country to places as far as Las Vegas and Florida.
While the identities of the people are not disclosed, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has said the program is only for those without a place to live, to connect with family and help them get their lives back on track.
