BOSTON — Wilyer Abreu still didn’t have a definitive timeline for his return to the Red Sox lineup, but was hoping for next week.
Abreu, who has been out since Aug. 19 with a calf strain, was hoping for next week.
“I don’t know. Soon. Waiting for the trainers to let me play,” he said. “Maybe next week. I don’t know.”
After hosting the A’s on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the Red Sox are in Tampa for three games next weekend.
Abreu has been gradually increasing the intensity of his running. Alex Cora said he’s up to 85 and when he reaches 90, he’d likely rejoin the team.
Abreu said the injury hasn’t affected his ability to swing the bat.
“I’ve been hitting. I’ve been doing everything. I dont’ feel anything when I hit,” he said. “The progressing of running has been very good.”
