MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WSMV) - President Trump announced Friday that the National Guard will be deploying to Memphis to help fight crime.
It’s a decision that has left state and local leaders divided about the best course of action.
“I do not support the national guard, however, they are coming,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said. “The mayor doesn’t have a say or authority to stop them.”
Soldiers will be joining other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Tennessee Highway patrol, in fighting crime.
Senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis) expressed optimism about the decision.
“Makes me as happy as a fat man at a golden corral buffet. This is something that’s been needed for a while,” Taylor explained.
