Miami — Javier Báez left the game in the second inning Friday night after fouling a pitch off his forehead.
The Tigers shortstop swung at a high changeup from Miami right-hander Sandy Alcantara. He opened up his shoulders early, exposing his face and the ball caromed off the top of his bat.
A knot formed immediately on his forehead, right between his eyes.
It looked like he was having trouble seeing and he was removed from the game. He walked off on his own power.
Trey Sweeney finished the at-bat (strikeout, charged to Báez) and took over at shortstop.
There was no immediate word from the Tigers on Báez’s condition.
