NORMAL ( 25News Now ) - Rivian Automotive confirmed on Friday it is recalling more than 24,000 electric-powered R1 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks due to a software issue.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said on its website that Hands-Free Highway Assist software for model year 2025 R1S and R1T EVs “may fail to correctly identify a lead vehicle.”

A Rivian spokesperson said about 24,400 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada were built with a version of its Advanced Driver Assistance System was equipped with updated software.

Rivian said a 2025 R1 SUV was involved in a “field incident in which Highway Assist experienced a one-time functional limitation due to a misclassification at a very low speed.”
