The Detroit Tigers lost to the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Friday night at loanDepot park, an ugly outcome that almost feels like a footnote to the bigger story of the night.

Tigers ace left-hander Tarik Skubal left the game in the fourth inning, his shortest start since 2021, with an apparent injury .

Skubal appeared to reach toward his left rib cage area, near his armpit, after throwing a pitch. He summoned catcher Jake Rogers, and they were quickly joined at the mound by manager A.J. Hinch and assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades. After a brief conversation with Rhoades, glove covering his mouth, Skubal exited without attempting a warmup pitch.

The Tigers’ official report said Skubal left “after experiencing tightness in his left side and is currently under evaluation.”
