MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Today marks 24 years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York City.

Nearly 3,000 Americans died.

In Memphis, people were walking up the steps at Beale Street Landing in Downtown Memphis to honor the lives lost in the attacks, including first responders. It started around 5 a.m. Thursday.

The public was invited to join the stair climb.

"It's really important for us to carry this on, every single year, even though it's been 20 years," event organizer Jesse Cisneros said. "A lot of the generation has forgotten about this moment. So it's important to us to talk to our kids about it. And also to invite other 20-year-olds, college kids, to come out here and see what this is about."
