GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) - The City of Greenville is investing $1.17 million to purchase land for affordable housing in the Haynie-Sirrine neighborhood as part of its master plan to diversify the area.

The city council has approved the purchase of four parcels of land, totaling just under an acre, located at 313 Hanie St, 315 Chapin St, and 7 and 9 Chicora Avenue. This initiative aims to address the gentrification of the historically Black community by increasing affordable housing and green space.

"What we're trying to do with the land that we're buying over there is to maximize affordable housing and maximize green space," said Ken Gibson, a Greenville City Council member.
