With less than two minutes to play in the third quarter of the Maryland football team’s most recent game, quarterback Malik Washington scrambled to his right as he attempted to elude a fast-approaching pass rush. The freshman was unable to maintain his balance and stumbled briefly in the backfield, losing control of the ball when his hand hit the ground as he braced for impact.

Northern Illinois recovered the fumble at its 12-yard line, nullifying a march by the Terrapins deep into the red zone that could have helped put away a close game. Maryland instead needed two more series before it reestablished a two-possession lead on the way to a 20-9 victory Sept. 5 at SECU Stadium.
