WEST MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The County of Maui’s Department of Water Supply has announced a Stage 2 water shortage for residents in the West Maui area.

Maui DWS said the area includes Lahaina, Kahana, Napili-Honokowai, and Honokohau.

Officials said a Stage 2 water shortage is determined by whether anticipated water demand in an area is projected to exceed the available water supply by 16 to 30%.

Maui DWS said that currently, Honokohau Stream flow is low, the inflow to Mahinahina Water Treatment Facility is zero, and the U.S. Drought Monitor forecast of D-2 severe drought conditions all support the decision to upgrade to a stage 2 Water Shortage for West Maui.
