A supermarket that was last year working out as the most expensive for a basket of essentials is now cheapest of all.

For almost three months running, Asda was the dearest of the six main supermarkets for eight basic grocery items including bread, butter, milk, beans, tea, coffee, chicken and mince.

But with the other supermarkets hiking the cost of their cheapest mince over recent weeks, Asda is now the only place you can find a 500g pack for under £3, with its bill for the basket coming to £13.09.
