Ultra low-cost Avelo Airlines made a major announcement this week when it ordered 50 Embraer E195-E2s with a further 50 options. It will become the US launch operator for the type and marks a strategic shift in its operation away from a single fleet type with the larger and market-experienced Boeing 737 that it currently flies. While the reduced per-aircraft capacity might sound like an odd decision at first - in combination with the existing 737-800s - it is strategic.

Right-sizing. That’s the word I would use to describe the announcement, as reported by this publication on Thursday. As I will explain below, Avelo’s markets require a smaller aircraft, especially when one considers the average loads on some of its routes.
