A section of Manchester Airport was evacuated today due to concerns over a potential gas leak. Fire engines and airport security responded swiftly to the scene, prompting a significant evacuation of staff and visitors. Video footage captured at the airport’s visitor centre showed large numbers of people exiting the building as alarms rang in the background, heading towards the airport’s Runway Visitor Park.

Witnesses reported that the evacuation was triggered by a suspected gas leak in one of the kitchens at the visitor centre. One member of the public stated, "People have been told the evacuation is due to a potential gas leak but that is yet to be confirmed." The evacuation was described as a precautionary measure, with around 100 individuals being moved from the area.

Kevin Todd, who was at the airport with his son, described the scene as "organised chaos". He noted, "It was evacuating 80-100 people waiting in the car park. People were just told to move out of the way with no assistance." Todd also mentioned a "horrific smell" that lingered for about 20 minutes before the alarm was activated, comparing it to "rotting sewage". He added that staff appeared confused about the situation, as cafes and shops were also evacuated.

As the incident unfolded, three fire engines and two fire and rescue vehicles were deployed to the visitor centre. A witness reported, "I'm currently at Manchester Airport Visitor Centre where three fire engines are in attendance, along with two fire and rescue vehicles, as well as airport security. The whole buildings around the Visitor Centre have been evacuated as far as we know."

By 13:53, the incident was reported to be resolved, bringing an end to the live coverage of the event. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the evacuation.
