IONIA, MI -- Nine inmates at Ionia County Jail were hospitalized after a gas leak.

A malfunctioning boiler caused a carbon monoxide buildup in the jail at 133 E. Adams St. The inmates were located in a nearby unit where they experienced headaches and nausea, according to a Facebook post from the Ionia County Sheriff Office.

The inmates were taken to local hospitals for evaluation and are expected to make a full recovery. They will be returned to the jail once fully treated, the post said.

The leak was located with help from the Ionia Department of Public Safety and isolated by facility maintenance.

No staff members reported any illness.
