Teal MP Zali Steggall has distanced herself from a social media controversy, unliking a post that said violence was "sometimes" necessary, in relation to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

The federal MP for Warringah had originally liked an Instagram post shared by Cheek Media co-founder Hannah Ferguson that said violence was “sometimes” necessary.

After significant backlash, Ms Steggall said she had removed her like from the post and rejected any suggestion she condoned political violence.

“I do not, and have not, condoned the horrific political violence that has occurred in the US and resulted in the death of Charlie Kirk. This is an horrific act,” she said.
