TEXAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Along Texas Drive, an old campground is starting a new chapter as Kalamazoo County’s newest nature preserve.

On Saturday, county staff opened the gates of the Arthur and Mildred Woollam Nature Preserve for a community celebration. Giveaways, prizes and nature activities kicked off the day.

In 2021, the county bought the 212 acre-property through the help of donations, county officials said. The park is named after the parents of donor John Woollam. Before becoming a county park, the area was known as Camp Rata Kiwan and used by the Boy Scouts.

The preserve features wooded trails, a kayak rental station, meeting hall and a nature center.
