KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The City of Kalamazoo’s Public Services Department will start flushing hydrants Sunday night.

City officials say most flushing will take place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but some may occur during the daytime. Public Services is expected to wrap up flushing by Sept. 24.

“Hydrant flushing is a regular maintenance activity performed twice each year to keep Kalamazoo’s water system working properly,” the city said in a news release.

“As water passes through underground water mains, minerals naturally found in groundwater can accumulate over time. Flushing the hydrants stirs up the water and forces these sediments out of the system.
