MARION COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) - A piece of land once marked by hardship and tragedy is now a protected community forest, but it's more than just a place for outdoor recreation. It's part of a widespread conservation effort.

On Saturday morning, the Brittons Neck community in Marion County gathered to celebrate the opening of Freedom Land Community Forest, a protected forest area with a rich history. New Alpha Community Development Center (CDC) and Dogwood Alliance worked together to purchase the land.

"Now we can look at 305 acres of land that one belonged to the Pee Dee tribe," said Reverand Leo Woodberry, Executive Director of New Alpha CDC and pastor at Kingdom Living Temple. "And was labored on without compensation by the people who came from Africa. And now this land will be restored,
