A two-year-old girl died after police were called to a home for a "welfare check" as a man and woman have been arrested.

The girl sadly died in hospital as detectives probe her tragic death. Police were called to a home on Hartington Close, in Thornaby, near Middlesbrough, at around 4.20pm on Saturday for a welfare check. Cops arrested a woman, 25, and a man, 21, in connection with the child's death and are being questioned by police.

Witnesses said investigators stayed at the property overnight on Saturday.

Forensics officers and a crime scene investigation van were pictured at the home on Sunday as the investigation into the tragic death continues, according to TeesideLive .

Forensics crews were spotted taking photographs and carrying out enquiries inside and around the property.
