The brief DeShaun Foster era at UCLA has come to an end.
On Sunday, the Bruins fired Foster just three games into his second season, following a 0-3 start that reached its nadir on Friday night with a 35-10 loss to New Mexico. Foster leaves his alma mater with a 5-10 record in 15 games.
"I want to extend my sincere appreciation to DeShaun for his contributions to UCLA Football over the course of many years, first as a Hall of Fame student-athlete, then as an assistant coach and finally as head coach," athletics director Martin Jarmond said in a release. "He was named to this role at a challenging time of year, on the cusp of a move to a new conference, and he embraced it, putting his heart into moving the program forward. His legacy and love for this university are firmly established. He is a Bruin for life, and we wish him, his wife, Charity, and their family the best."
Foster's tenure began under unusual circumstances, as he was hired in February 2024 after the previous coach, Chip Kelly, left to become the offensive coordinator for Big Ten foe Ohio State. Foster, who had been UCLA's running backs coach since 2017, had recently left to become the running backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.
He left after a short period of time to replace Kelly, but the team struggled to find success during his time as head coach. The Bruins got off to a 1-5 start in Foster's first season in 2024, but they ended the year with some momentum, winning four of their last six to finish 5-7.
Between UCLA's play late in 2024 and the offseason addition of former five-star Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, there was some hope heading into Year 2. However, it's been a rough start for the Bruins, who suffered a blowout loss to former Pac-12 rival Utah in Week 1 before losing back-to-back games to Group of Five opponents in UNLV and the Lobos.
UCLA promoted Tim Skipper, who was previously serving as special assistant to the head coach, to the role of interim head coach. Skipper spent the 2024 season as the interim head coach at Fresno State, finishing 6-7 as he ultimately was not given the full-time position.
