CONCORD, N.C. (WBTV) - A Cornelius police officer was hit by a vehicle and killed while on a bike ride with his wife Saturday afternoon in Concord.

Officer Gabriel Stainback was sworn into the Cornelius Police Department in December 2024 after being hired as a cadet and going through the Basic Law Enforcement Training program.

He was newly married.

“Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family,” the department wrote in a Facebook post. “Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy.”

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation, according to the Cornelius Police Department.
