Mac Jones is proving he can be a higher-end backup in the NFL.

The former New England Patriots quarterback has played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and, now, the San Francisco 49ers since getting jettisoned out of Foxboro.

Although things got pretty bad with Jones at the end in New England, there’s certainly a strong case that he didn’t get a fair shake, given the situation Bill Belichick set him up.

He went 2-5 with Jacksonville last season on a bad Jaguars team after Trevor Lawrence went down. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy sustained a toe injury last week, paving the way for Jones to step in to start Sunday against the Saints.

He went 26-of-39 in the air for 279 yards with three touchdowns in the 26-21 over New Orleans, bringing San Francisco to 2-0 on the season.
