City Says Move Followed Federal Protocol, Not an Endorsement of Kirk

West Hollywood officials are clarifying their decision to lower city flags after a presidential order issued in the wake of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a figure whose political views, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ and transgender rights, have been sharply criticized by many in the community.

The city emphasized that the move was not an endorsement of Kirk’s beliefs or actions. Instead, it was carried out under West Hollywood’s long-standing Policy for Recognitions and Memorials, which directs city staff to follow presidential proclamations when determining when flags are flown at half-staff. Trump’s proclamation called for flags to remain at half mast until sunset on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
