President Donald Trump took a break from lashing out at “radical leftists” Monday to set his sights on the NFL, specifically its new rule this season on kickoffs, which he proclaimed as ushering in a new era of “sissy football.”

The NFL implemented a new rule this season that establishes what it calls a “Dynamic Kickoff,” which officials describe as resembling a “typical scrimmage play” by aligning players on both teams closer together, a rule designed to restrict movement and reduce speed. Experts argue that the new rule may prove safer for players.

But for Trump, however, the new rule was a non-starter, and was “at least as dangerous” as the traditional kickoff rules.

“The NFL has to get rid of that ridiculous looking new Kickoff Rule; how can they make such a big and sweeping change so easily and quickly?” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social Monday.

“It’s at least as dangerous as the ‘normal’ kickoff, and looks like hell. The ball is moving, and the players are not, the exact opposite of what football is all about. ‘Sissy’ football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas?”

Not all former NFL players and coaches were supportive of the new rule, with many who spoke with the New York Times in a report published earlier this month calling it a “mixed bag.” Trump did not mince his words, however, and continued to outright condemn the new rule, while heaping praise on college football for not following suit.

“It’s like wanting to ‘roll back’ the golf ball so it doesn’t go (nearly!) as far,” Trump wrote. “Fortunately, college football will remain the same, hopefully forever!”
