When new natural features emerge in U.S. national parks, they are often celebrated. For instance, back in July, researchers observed a new thermal pool in the Norris Geyser Basin , in Yellowstone National Park, which visitors welcomed with plenty of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, however, the new island recently discovered in Glacier Bay National Park is not good news; rather, it is one of the predictable consequences of the current climate crisis.

The NASA Earth Observatory recently published images showing the disappearance of a glacier in Alaska and the formation of a so-called proglacial lake. In one of these growing water bodies, researchers have now found a new island known as Prow Knob, which, a few years ago, used to be in direct contact with the glacier itself.
