HOUSTON — The fallout from negative online comments about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is stretching from Texas classrooms to national agencies.

In Texas, state lawmakers have formed committees to review how free speech is handled on college campuses. That move comes after a Texas Tech student was arrested for cheering at a campus vigil for Kirk.

Governor Greg Abbott amplified the controversy when he reposted a clip of the student on X, writing, “Definitely picked the wrong school to taunt the death of Charlie Kirk. Thanks Texas Tech.”
