N.J. woman kidnapped 4-year-old and took him to Walmart. Here’s why she won’t face prison time.

A judge has found a Salem County woman not guilty by reason of insanity after she was charged with kidnapping a child three years ago.

Daishaliz Velez Fernandez , 28, of Salem City, was accused of taking a 4-year-old boy from Harvest Point Apartments in Salem on May 9, 2022, and driving him to Pennsylvania and Delaware, according to prosecutors.

The child was recovered unharmed about five hours after he was taken.

Velez Fernandez lived in the same apartment complex as the victim but had no connection to the child, authorities said.

She took the boy while he was playing and drove him to Pennsylvania, where they visited a Walmart, investigators said.

From there, they headed to Delaware.
