A 65-year-old man died hours after he entered the joint processing center in the Harris County Jail last week, marking the 13th in-custody death reported this year by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, which operates the downtown Houston jail.
Arthur Miles was arrested by deputies for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, according to the sheriff’s office. He was brought into the joint processing center just after 3:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
Miles was waiting to be booked at 5:20 p.m., when staff inside the jail noticed he was experiencing a medical emergency, the sheriff’s office said. Medical staff began administering aid to Miles about 2 minutes later, according to the sheriff’s office.
Miles was transported by a Houston Fire Department ambulance to St. Joseph
