KINGSTON — The city is asking residents to pick the municipality’s official bird.

Voting for the official bird opened Thursday and wraps up Oct. 3.

There are 16 birds on the ballot that are native to the Kingston area and can be commonly seen in different areas of the city.

Among the candidates are the Blue Jay, Eastern Screech-Owl, Mallard duck, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Flicker, Song Sparrow, Red-Winged Blackbird, Red-tailed Hawk, Common Loon, House Wren, Pileated Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove and Common Tern.

The American Crow was originally omitted from the list but added at the public’s request.

The official bird vote is part of Kingston’s effort to be certified as a bird-friendly city.
